Stopping Comment Spam at effective web ministry notes

Stopping Comment Spam

Today some interesting announcements came out from the major blog and search engine companies. They are all teaming together to fight comment spam in blogs. If you’re not familiar with the practice, some spammers will comment on blogs, usually deep in the blog hoping the owner won’t see it, with links to their site. They believe that the multiple links to their site will increase their rankings.

Unfortunately it works.

Fortunately it’s going to stop.

MSN, Yahoo, Google and others have all agreed that adding rel=”nofollow” to the html code for a link will cause the search engine to not count that link.

because I’m not doing the explanation any justice, check out the links to the different search engine blogs above. They do a much better job than I can in explaining it.

I’m glad too becuase this blog has been hit with a porn spammer lately. I’ve been able to delete them all, but it’s a pain. I even wrote Blogger to ask them if they have anything in place to help me block porn spammers. They replied “no”.

On my WordPress blog I get about 5 spam comments a day. I turned on comment approval, so now they don’t hit the blog at all. It’s still a pain to remove all the proposed comments, though.
