The Seattle Duck is doing a test: Blog vs. e-newsletter: a Microsoft test case. You should check it out. In short, they are running an experiment to see which form of communication will work best for their target audience. In their case, it’s college students. It’s a great read and I’m hoping I’ll be able to get the concluded results.
I’ve been wrestling with this in my mind lately also. I love the fact that email is a push technology; that is we push information to someone who has asked to receive it. However spam filters sometimes gets in the way…and they aren’t as timely else they become unwanted. I love the fact that blogs are a pull technology; that is we post information but require readers to be pulled to the blog. It gets around spam filters and with the added bonus of RSS, blogs seem to work even better.
They both have their pros and cons…and I’m currently seeing them as I am on a team of 6 people planning a global conference. We decided we’d open a private blog instead of using email all the time because it was easy to create, it has threaded discussions, and is documented. Much better than a pile of emails that I get lost in.
Thanks to Steve at Micro Persuasion for the tip.
