Planning Ahead for an Effective Redesign

You’ve been there before. You’ve looked at your website and thought, “Man! This thing needs a redesign!” Then (hopefully) you had a follow-up thought of “So how can I do this without losing any visitors?”

When you do a redesign, you risk losing rankings, deep links, and could confuse visitors. However, if you plan well, you won’t suffer too much and the trade off of a fresh site will be to your advantage.

I did not read the article, but I am in process of redesigning a ministry site. One of the things I plan to do which has never been done is to implement a custom Error 404 page which should hopefully divert the problems with deep links. Also, the redesign will employ a new menu structure, a new folder structure, and valid HTML (still thinking about XHTML, though) and CSS. Those two should improve accessability for disabled folks.
