This is a good article on A List Apart about easy ways to optimize search engine placement by writing standards-compliant web design.
Rob likes to say, “Design for your target audience and the search engines will follow,” but I would add that search engines are your target audience, too, since they bring much of your target audience to your site.
Making your site standards-compliant makes it easier for a search engine spider to read.

Yes, I do say that. And I say the other one too…just not enough!
At MinistryNet in Budapest I talked about how we really do have 2 audiences…one is the visitor and one is the search engine. I think of it like this now: Design for people and search engines will follow if you’ve designed well for both! And as it turns out, a lot of the things the SEs like are what people like too!
