Google Maps in News & Media at effective web ministry notes

Google Maps in News & Media

Hummm….looking at how Google Maps are being used in News & Media has got me wondering how this could be used for ministry purposes?

The first thought that jumps to my mind is a denomination using it to map all of it’s churches in an area…or the country/world. That’s too obvious though.

What about what campuses we (Campus Crusade) have a ministry presence? What about where all the FamilyLife Marriage Conferences will take place? What about mapping cities where your organization has a presence? What about mapping where you’ve had an email conversation with someone thus showing your breadth in ministry reach? What about not mapping where something has happened, but what areas you’re praying for as a ministry with notes and prayer requests?

What other ideas do you have?

To me an obvious use would be to map all the people who attend a church and to map in-home small groups. It would help the church see areas where there are a lot more people than groups, it would help group leaders see who lives close by, and it would enable people looking for a group to see what groups meet close by.

We’ve used ZeeMaps.com to create a carpool map for our group. All we did was export our data from Access in a CSV file and then upload to ZeeMaps.com. Now we can see who lives next to somebody who needs a ride.

Uh, Rob…..is this what you are talking about? It’s done with the Google Maps API in XHTML/CSS/XSLT/PHP/JavaScript with an XML data source.
