Google Reader Improvements

google reader logoI know from reading the stats on this blog that most of you access this site via RSS. I love it!

But about two-thirds of you are not using Google Reader. And honestly that’s cool with me. But I did want you to know that ever since I switched to gReader, sifting through my RSS feeds has been so much faster and more efficient. I really can’t think of a better way to improve and streamline how to interact with new web knowledge than an RSS reader.

Today Google Reader released some improvements that I think takes it to the next level. I encourage you to check it out if you’re not using it.

There is also a great little video that shows how Robert Scoble uses Google Reader and gets through over 600 feeds very quickly.

I do pretty much the same. I can clear out over 200 feed updates very quickly using these settings: on the left above all my feeds I have it only show what is “updated” (not all), I use tags/folders for every feed, sort them by oldest, and use the Expanded view. Then I learned a couple of keyboard shortcuts to help me slice it fast: j = jump to next item, k = go back an item, m = mark as read, s = star. I star anything I want to read later while I’m clearing out items. Then I’ll go back later to clear out the stared items.

Fastest way to get started: download the latest from Firefox, go into Tools > Options and then the Feeds tab and click “Subscribe to the feed using:” and select Google.
