Kids love to solve a mystery, so why not let them become young Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watsons as they discover the mysteries of the Bible? Here is a fun way of doing Bible review that will get your kids hunting for clues and solutions.Â
For this form of Bible review, you will need several envelopes. I use 6 x 9 manila envelopes. This next step is optional, but definitely well worth the effort to add color and fun: attach a “Get a Clue” label to each envelope. You can make these labels easily on your computer or by hand. Next, display the envelopes on a table or hide them around the room to add to the mystery. Finally, if you were me, you’d put together a wonderful Sherlock Holmes outfit to make the kids realize you have finally “fallen off your rocker”.
Now decide what you would like to quiz the kids on. For example, you could write up several Scriptures from one book of the Bible excluding the reference. Stick a Scripture in each envelope. Have the kids take turns in picking a “clue” envelope and see if they can guess which book of the Bible the Scriptures come from. Another example would be to quiz the children on a Bible character by placing pictures inside the envelopes that relate to the person. For instance, if you choose Abraham, you might have pictures of a tent, stars in the sky, Sarah laughing, 3 angels (Gen. 18:2-14), or Melchizedek. How difficult you make these guess-able (is that a word?) is completely up to you.
After the kids make a guess, you could have one child pretend to be Dr. Watson (with costume of course) who knows the answer to the mystery that is trying to be solved. He or she can give a thumbs up or down depending on the guess. It’s really all quite elementary, my dear Watson!
