To answer this question, we need to get operational definitions first.
Pornography: Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal.
Morality: 1. The quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct.
2. A system of ideas of right and wrong conduct: religious morality; Christian morality.
So, from a purely dictionary definition, there is nothing inherently wrong with viewing material that causes sexual arousal.
The problem arises (no pun intended) when the issue of morality is laid (another unintended pun) over the issue of pornography. Who creates the standards of right and wrong conduct?
Individual moral conviction is where it all starts. If you believe it’s wrong for you, it’s wrong for you. But your neighbor may believe it’s acceptable. For him it is not wrong. Over time, groups of people express their beliefs and society forms general “mores,” the accepted traditional customs and moral attitudes of a particular social group.
Then, once the standards of right and wrong conduct are established, they are often codified into law. But are the laws just?
In libertarian political thought there is the Zero Aggression Principle, which states that no person or group of persons may commit force or fraud upon another person or group of persons. So, if all the parties participating in pornography do so entirely within their free will, and neither force nor fraud are perpetrated, the ZAP has not been violated, and no crime should exist.
In the manufacture of porn, especially the manufacture of porn that involves images of living or dead human beings, special care must be taken to assure that no force or fraud is committed. That is why child porn is morally wrong and illegal. Children…even willing children…are not of legal age to enter into contracts (like having their bodies photographed having sex), and cannot defend themselves against force or fraud.
So pornography in and of itself is neither moral nor immoral. Societal mores dictate its morality. If you do not accept society’s judgment, then the morality of pornography is not relevant to your life. If you do not violate the ZAP, you have committed no wrong.
But that’s theory. The real world today judges the manufacturers and consumers of pornography differently. You could go to jail for making or consuming porn, especially porn involving children.
While pornography is neither moral nor immoral, using it can have legal consequences. This should help you make decisions about using pornography.
You can be a Great Lover without using porn.
