Player versus Player (PvP) combat is in your Priest’s future, even if you’ve avoided it so far. Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) has brought more advanced, real time battles to the game.

The first real time PvP battle zone is Lake Wintergrasp. In this new zone, players face off on the live server (no instancing) to win points they can use to buy rare and valuable items.

Competing in WoW PvP combat as a Priest requires a lot of forethought and planning. With an impressive amount of mana and a wide variety of healing spells, a Priest can be a strong PvP combatant. However, since they have a low health level and no armor, if an opponent can get past your Priest’s defenses, it’s all over. If you’re going to do well in Priest PvP combat, you have to have a smart plan. If you don’t, your Priest will be dying an awful lot.

By default, Priests are the healers in any player versus player group battles. But it doesn’t have to work this way. Holy and Discipline Priests are very useful in group PvP in the arena and battlegrounds, where they buff and debuff characters generally filling the time-honored healer role. Shadow Priests, on the other hand can be powerful DPS (Damage Per Second) dealers, with the added bonus of being able to heal when necessary. Whether your Priest primarly supports the party, or primarily goes out to do damage to the enemy depends on how you develop and play the class.

A Priest can be extremely effective against many classes – they can use Fear spells to control opponents and dish out DoTs (Damage Over Time) spells, while at the same time, they can dispell most any spell an opponent casts. However, against other classes, Priests are in real danger. Without the correct strategy, a Priest has virtually no hope against Rogues, for example.
