Why would a Christian need a life coach, they have Jesus don’t they?

Of course they have Jesus, of course they have the comfort of the Holy Spirit. They have God’s Word for direction and they have a church and pastor for advice and counsel. But God has provided another resource and tool that addresses common concerns of life, the Christian Life Coach. Here are some reasons a Christian might find it beneficial to have a Christian Life Coach.

1. Because all Christians are humans and are subject to hurt, discouragement, loneliness, getting off course, illness, stress, just as any other human falls prey to. The Bible says two are better than one because when one falls down the other helps him up. Having a coach at your back provides support.
2. Because all mankind is given gifts and talents to be used and sometimes they blossom better when support is given from a coach.
3. Because Christians need a trusted source to confidentially brainstorm with or vent to.
4. Because God has given each of us assignments and we may become more productive when making intentional plans with a life coach, and having the accountability of our coach.
5. Because the Bible says to make plans by seeking advice. A coach can sometimes help us think of issues with our plan that we might not have thought of; can give us clarity about how we are interpreting a situation; can challenge us about different aspects of our plan.
6. A Coach can be the person we practice a difficult conversation with.
7. Christians can get stale or in a rut just like any other person. A Coach can help us out of our rut.
8. A Christian life coach prays. The Bible says when two or more are gathered the Lord is there with them. The coaching sessions are spirit covered.
9. During times of transition of moving, changing jobs, loss of a loved one, travel, a coach is a common denominator that goes with you. Because you usually interact by telephone, you can call her from the east coast and again from your home or office on the west coast. When you move to a new city where no one knows your name, your coach does.
10. Because God wants you healthy to do his work.

To find a Christian Life Coach, search online. Many coaches can coach all over North America. Read the biographical information of coaches, look over what types of services they offer. Coaches set their own fees. Most use a combination of email and telephone. Some coaching is done in person or in groups. You may email as many as you like. Most offer a free telephone call where you can further assess if they are the coach for you. Most require you telephone them, so having a good telephone plan is helpful. Some with a good telephone plan may offer to call you.

Choose the coach that best suits your personality and needs. Most coaches are in this field because they have a natural bent and gift already which they have fostered through life coach training. Most coaches have been coached themselves. A Christian coach coaches from a Biblical perspective. Make sure they are coming from the perspective you expect.

The coach you hire should send you a contract that outlines the program, the cost to you, payment method, what to expect, duration and cancellation clauses. This may be sent by email and you can scan or fax back a signed copy; or it can be exchanged by regular mail.

Most coaches require payment in advance by check, money order, credit card or PayPal. You become their client as soon as the payment is processed. The payment usually includes time and cost for contract exchange, email exchanges, reading your prep form, prayer, personal preparation of resources they think may be of assistance to you and the actual time spent in the session.

In most cases you need to choose a day and time you can set aside for your personal appointment. Life Coaches have other clients and sometimes diversify with other business offerings; they need to pencil you in to a certain time and count on you showing up.

When it is time for your call, find a quiet place in your home or office where you are unlikely to be disturbed. It is usually helpful to have a pen and paper handy. Have your telephone ready with your coach’s contact information on it. You may want to have a glass of water, tea or coffee in case of a dry throat. You may want to light a candle or put your feet up so that you are at peace. You can even do the call outside on your front porch, back deck or hot tub, if it works. Having a headset is handy as many calls are 45 minutes or an hour and you will not get tired holding a phone to your ear.

Together you will have a conversation. You will update your coach, and indicate what areas you want to address. Some coaches work with curriculum or do teaching modules, but most coaching is a conversation. You are the one paying the money, so direct the conversation how you want it to go. Your coach will listen, respond and ask powerful questions.

Hopefully at each call’s end you will have a take away point or many. The real work is often what takes place in between calls as your conversation plays in your mind, and as you take steps that you have received clarity on.

Many coaches allow you to try coaching short term. Why not contact one and see if it is something God is leading you into.
