As members of the Church it is encouraged of us to read the Book of Mormon on a daily basis, yet it is not uncommon to find that this simple requirement often takes a back seat to the routines of daily life, despite the many pleads of our prophets.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints predicates itself upon the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, therefore it is integral for us as members to engage in daily Book of Mormon reading.
There is no better way for us as members to KNOW the founding truths held within the Book of Mormon, than by making Book of Mormon reading a daily part of our lives.
But with such as simple task as reading the Book of Mormon is, we have to ask ourselves the question why? Why is it so hard for members of the Church to read the Book of Mormon on a daily basis? In this instance, it can be likened unto the account of Moses and the brass serpent. Even as simple as to look upon the brass serpent to be healed, many did not, choosing therefore to perish.
Maybe it is a lack of faith, or seemingly too easy therefore serving no purpose, maybe it’s too boring, or maybe it is due to hard hearts, what ever the reason is, it is a barrier to daily Book of Mormon reading which in turn affects our ability to spiritually see the truths held within and thus clouding our ability to KNOW our Savior Jesus Christ.
So what can we do to help us engage in daily Book of Mormon reading?
1.      Read With Purpose
Reading for the sake of reading loses its appeal real quick. It shouldn’t be a chore, none of like chores right? Find a reason to read whether it’s to search for answers, increase your understanding of Gospel principles or even memorize scriptures, having a purpose can help us to engage in Book of Mormon reading. So ask yourself, what you hope to achieve from reading today? Or why am I reading the Book of Mormon?
2.      Bring The Book Of Mormon To Life With Media
With technology ever increasing, there is often less of a requirement to imagine. Today we are blessed with media that help us to be a part of the Book of Mormon. Using media such as movies, art and music can drastically help us envision being a part of the Book of Mormon, or at least help us desire to read the Book of Mormon for ourselves.
3.      Use A Chart
As humans we love to see progress. A chart assists us in seeing how close to the finish line we are. Physically being able to mark off or colour in our progress gives us a sense of achievement.
4.      Challenge Yourself
Often being challenged helps us rise to the occasion and there is no exemption when it comes to Book of Mormon reading. There is something inside of each of us that drives us to succeed. Whether the challenge is to read the Book of Mormon in one week, read a chapter a day or read for twenty minutes a day? Do not fail to challenge yourself!
5.     Desire
To read with no desire is a chore, it literally is, don’t make Book of Mormon reading a chore, so how can we gain desire? Pray! Get on your knees and pray, don’t just pray once, cease not to pray continually and then will you gain a desire. This is a challenge of faith.
