There had been thirteen Gospels, but some time in the third century, the church bigwigs – in their wisdom, armed with regal nods – had chosen to do away with all except those of Mark, Luke, Mathew and John. However, even Biblical scholars agree that these four were not actually written by those apostles but by later day Christians.
That perhaps explains the introduction “Gospel According To Mathew’. Dan Brown simply sensationalized in his bestseller (the book, as usual, was far superior to its screen version), what many people knew from Umberto Eco’s book ‘The Name of the Rose’ that many were the hands that took it upon themselves to tarnish (as if they could) the name of Jesus and it is very likely that they were themselves unaware of the external designs working on them. Brown has penned a most astounding story in the way only an Alistair McLean or a John Le Carre could. For all that, its core is implausible.
Alas, Brown’s theory is flawed! Jesus was not a man. But let us for a moment consider that He was. Does it follow that He had to fall in love and marry? Aren’t there millions of people who don’t do that? I am not citing the examples of nuns and catholic priests who are decreed to remain so. Is it rare to find people who do not feel the need engage in procreational activities? Is it absolutely necessary to do that like some other body functions need to be carried out? Couldn’t Jesus have been one of these very human entities?
Any selfless man, when he falls in love, will automatically find a certain degree of possessiveness overtaking him where his ladylove is concerned. If it does not happen, it simply is not love. Can you imagine Jesus being possessive, overtly or covertly? Well, give it an unbiased thought. What do you get?
Jesus was not man in the sense we understand humans. He did not need to fall in love or get married. He did not come down to the Earth to lead the life of an ordinary man. He was born here with the express purpose of wiping off mankind’s sins and died doing it in his 33 years of life. Even if you do not subscribe to this divine order, you can give allowance to a man not being passionate at all to marry and beget children, can’t you? Why can’t Jesus be one?
Which brings us to the Gospel according to Judas. The revelation that Jesus had asked Judas that He (Jesus) be betrayed by him (Judas) is no great earth-shattering truth. If Judas was requested by Jesus to betray Him, so be it. In no way does it make martyr of Judas and even if it does, what effect does it have on Jesus’ holiness? Someone had to do it and Judas did it, that is all. It could very well have been any other.
